The HPI Wheely King
[Wheely King Info] [Wheely King Hop-Ups] [Wheely King Mods]

The Wheely King is a 1/12-scale, solid-axle, "traditional" style, electric monster truck from HPI Racing and was released in late-2006 as a 2WD model in ready-to-run form, but it wasn't long before HPI offered a 4WD RTR version. It's got a "Twin Vertical Plate" chassis design somewhat like that of the Savage, but its suspension consists of a four-link arrangement with solid axles; quite a departure from the all-wheel independent suspension so common these days. And yes, it does live up to its namesake and pull wheelies at the drop of a hat!

Under normal circumstances, the Wheely King is a relatively stiff-riding rig that really does look a lot like a scaled-down version of a "real" USHRA monster truck. But if you do one minor tweak you can turn this machine into a crawler that's surprisingly capable in 99% stock form with amazing suspension articulation, and do a few more mods to turn this thing into a real rock crawler. Or, go brushless with some high-zoot Li-Po batteries and see what kind of speed you can get and step up to the challenge of controlling a fast, high center-of-gravity truck!

he HPI Wheely King is a fun and capable little truck. But who's satisfied with "fun and capable" when it can be MORE fun and MORE capable? But where to take this little machine? You could go brushless with some high-zoot Li-Po batteries and see what kind of speed you can get, but I think that's what everyone tends to do with their machines. Not that there's anything wrong with that; speed is fun! But a tall, solid-axle monster truck's design isn't exactly conducive to speed runs, unless you simply enjoy the challenge.
